Continuation
1. Friday and Saturday is the best time to Party. Most gay clubs ( Opens around 10 PM but the crowd usually
arrives much later.
2. A rainy weather can actually ruin the party as many people would opt to stay home instead of going out and getting wet but a few showers seems not be able to kill a true Manila party-boy spirit!
3. Don’t bring important things that may get stolen or lost like Passport, Driving license or Credit Card
4. Drinks are fairly cheap Wine by glass can cost like $4.00 USD to $5.50 USD Beer is like $1.00 USD to $3.00 USD (if your in a more chic bar) Cocktails are like $7 USD
Note: The local most popular beer is called San Miguel LIGHT. Europeans most of the time feels SMB Light tastes like half beer and half water. San Miguel PALE PILSEN beer has more resemblance of German or Czech Beer but also more calories.
5. The best way to transport yourself is taxi. Why? It’s DEAD cheap! If you’re in Makati to Malate it will take you like $3.00 to 3.50 USD. Busses and the notorious Jeppneys are a bit unsafe and should be avoided
I was told. Partying in Manila doesn’t require anyone to rush to the last train for the night as basically once you go out of the club there are 10 or more taxis waiting to drive you back to your hotel for a very reasonable cost of almost nothing oh lala! I loved this affordable Luxury in places like Bangkok and Manila. But look up for Taxi drivers that don’t use their taxi meter, they can suddenly ask for much higher price and if you don’t agree, you may find yourself dumped at some real dark and spooky street corner.
Best is to ask the driver to put on the taxi meter the moment the taxi starts, if he don’t agree, step out and take another.
Now lets started!
If you’re staying in a hotel in Makati area the best places to start the evening is to go to Greenbelt for dinner. Well there are a lot of restaurants to choose from and there are lots of guys to watch, it’s like a mini piazza with a typical American architectural design. After dinner you can have a pre-cocktail drink in M Bar (Museum café) which is located next to Ayala Museum. It’s a nicely laid out café / bar/ restaurant in one and they have a nice garden view. There’s a bar outside and its fun to sit there and watch the local crowd which is hip and a bit international. You can fairly easily spot gay’s there, just use your gaydar. If its not yet midnight you can take a walk in the beautiful garden landscape of Greenbelt, there’s even a pond, and of course lots of people to watch.
There’s another bar in Greenbelt and its called Absinth located on the 3rd flr. But it usually gets crowded only around 11pm to Midnight. There some gay crowd during Thursdays but most of the time it’ more of a straight place.
A Prelude to a Party
Manila is a warm and hot tropical climate (+26 to +30 centigrade in the morning) (+25 to +27 centigrade during the evening) so don’t wear something heavy! Cotton Pants, comfy shoes and thin shirts are advisable. Don’t forget your best charming smile as well. NOW WHERE TO GO NEXT! After Greenbelt you can get a cab and head to Malate which has the concentration of most of gay bars in Manila. Malate is separated into 2 main tourist areas Ermita and Mabini st. is for the straights and Nakpil/Orosa streets for the flamboyant you. Tell the driver to go to Nakpil st. Corner Orosa st. and once there, you see a concentration of young skinny to medium built boys and then you know you in the right area. You will see O-bar in the corner followed by other bars,
O-bar is a small bar with an outside sitting. They sell cocktails but quality seemed to goes along with the low price so I stayed with the beer. The traffic is heavy so my Aqua de Gio perfume was over taken by Diesel fumes (hahaha) but anyway it can be very exotic experience specially fom someone who came from Switzerland.
I then moved inside the club after I was done with the car exhaust fumes. Its nice but very small and it can get pretty packed during the late hours of Fridays and Saturdays. So dancing is impossible unless you have a bamboo dance style (swing to the left and swing to the right) by the way I forgot to mentioned that the speaker outside is always on full blast which makes conversation possible only at shouting levels. There are usually some cute boys hanging around on the opposite side of the street and I had no idea what they were up to until was informed that most of them are pick up boys for pay, so if your not into that, stay away. I then went to another bar called Storyboard and had a nice espresso and liqueur to reawaken my animalistic party spirit and after a few cups I was back to business.
Dancing Disco Balls
From Storyboard Bar you will see a courtyard that leads to a club called MAFFIA, they have a spectacular outdoor lighting effect Las Vegas style. Oh and a more posh sitting area with comfortable sofa. I had a drink called Chocolate Martini, which cost like $6.00 USD hhhhhmmm, there were so deliciously-addictive. Now lets talk about the crowd and the look of the bar. The crowd are younger guys “college boys” which for me look like high schooler from 8th or 9th grade. Maffia play cool music from the retro to the present. Those songs we all so love like Tina turner, Abba, Madonna, Kylie, etc. I got mesmerized! What I observed from the bars in Manila is that they will play the latest Music in the gay clubs even with out any resemblance of being gay at all? Some of the music is so Techno that you need to take drugs to dance on its rhythm. Anyway I danced there until my curiosity poked me to check the Club next to it. BED.
I left MAFFIA 1.30am just to que to BED which is next door and it took me like 5 minutes to get in, at least its not freezing and I enjoyed talking to the locals and anticipating my next surprise. Well yes indeed I was surprised to see a chic club in Manila which I didn’t expect. It almost rivals Asia’s number 1 dance club
(DJ station of Bangkok) BED only has two levels though it has an international chic appeal. The sound system doesn’t hurt your ears, Chic Laser beams and a Cozy Ambiance. Downstairs together with dancing Macho
Go-Go boys in there sexy outfit, and lots of young cuties ogling on them. I ogled too. (hahaha) The crowd was very friendly and most of them can speak English. Many of them were very flirty with no reservation for shyness. This place is a fishing ground for young asian-twink. The party energy never seemed to stop and they played nice music as well. I had too much to drink so I needed to pee and went to the toilet and I was amazed about the aquarium design. There is a urinal that which is divided with a big fish tank that gives you the possibility to look on the person on the other side of the aquarium. Hahaha you have to go there to see it for yourself. Hilarious- interesting! So I think it was worth a visit so I went there 5 times an hour to pee and peek. I even took a photo to show to all my friends.
The party in Bed was getting better as the hours got later. So I ordered another cocktail, the one that has the funniest name of “Conrad tribal Exotic Ethnic Drink WOW”! Where in the world did they get the name and it thus really an exotic mix. Well one should try one as I feel like an exotic blondie in the midst of the Asian boys.
Its getting late and I felt a bit wasted around 3am, by the time I almost on my way to go home a singing diva perform a splendid so 80’s drag-show and they played my favorite music “ Lets hear it for the boy” disco version. The party was just getting another kick around 4 AM when my boyfriend dragged me out to conclude the party hopping as we were going to Boracay the next day.To All the boys I met and Danced with "Au Revoir!"
I could have stayed a bit longer if not for the flight that we have to catch to Boracay. We left BED CLUB while they were still playing “Please don’t stop the Music”. I think It was the best decision as we are still able to get a few hours of sleep but not decent enough. My perception of manila as a backwater city has changed.
Manila and the Philippines (its wonderful islands) have added colorful photos on my travel albums. I can’t wait to go back. The lesson for today is ‘ DON’T BRING THE DISCO BALLS TO THE DISCO.’ |
